PAPHIOPEDILUM 'Barbigerum' 'Violet spot'
They have uniformly green leaves and blooms on an erect, green, 12 to 16 cm, single flowered, shortly brown to dull yellowish inflorescence with an elliptic floral bract and carrying a small, single flower.
Paphiopedilums are one of the 'lady's slipper' orchids. They originate in China, India and tropical asia. They are easy to grow and very rewarding.
Potting: The key to growing paphiopedilums is to keep a good root system, as the plants have no pseddobulbs or stems to store water or nutrients. Fir, bark, peat moss, charcoal, coconut husk and perlite are good medium for potting. Air circulation between the roots and under the pot are helpful.
Moisture: Paphios needs to be watered at least twice a week. Water when the medium is about to dry. Never allow it to fully dry.Pots should not stand in water.
Misting: Misting may be beneficial in the morning on warm days. |

Note: Some species of Paphiopedilum are considered as endangered and possessing them could be considered illegal.
Lighting:. Paphiopedilums need good sunlight . Paphiopedilums do not need as much light as cattleyas, or vandas.
Fertilizer: NPK 20-10-20 or weaker can be added to the water once each month. It is good to wash off the fertilizers with water to reduce accumulation and root damage. It is good to have two waterings in between fertilizing.
Temperature: They will be comfortable at any temperature that is fine for humans. Avoid extremes of temperatures. Can tolerate 12 to 37 Deg Cel and are good for tropical conditions.
Repotting: The larger plants will produce more new growths and more flowers. Hence it is better not to divide them. Place the plants in the smallest pot that will accommodate the root system.
